MissionWay is a partner of The Destiny Academy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which serves 850 students in Kindergarten through grade 8.

Destiny Academy sponsored students are children whose families cannot afford to send them to school. The school’s founders, Hareg and Yonatan, strive to educate the whole child — mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They place a special emphasis on the Christ-inspired virtues of respect, diligence, love, honesty, and peace.

HOW CAN I HELP?

1. You can pray! Pray for peace, guidance and health for Hareg, Yonatan and Elsa (the school nurse, who we also sponsor) as they serve the Destiny community during this challenging time. Pray for safety for all of our Destiny families! And for Hareg and Yonatan to have the resources they need for their ministry.
2. You can give a one-time gift to help cover the costs such as teacher salaries, rent and even food for the Destiny families. Select “Destiny” in the dropdown menu.
3. You can give ongoing by becoming a sponsor, which is $500 for one year. Select “Destiny” in the dropdown menu.
4. You can give to help sponsor Elsa, the school nurse/social worker. We sponsor her $400 monthly salary. She takes care of the needs of our sponsor families at Destiny. Please select “Destiny Medical” in the dropdown menu to help support Elsa.

UPDATES FROM DESTINY ACADEMY - JANUARY 2024

As we reflect on the joyous season that has just passed (Ethiopian Christmas is on Jan. 6), we are thrilled to share with you the heartwarming success of our Christmas outreach. We were privileged to extend our hand of fellowship to 257 families within our community. Our “Caring and Sharing” team went on house visits to personally reached out to families, bringing not only food items but also the presence of our Father. The warmth of these interactions was deep, with families expressing gratitude for the sense of being remembered.

In the afternoon, the spirit of giving continued to glow brightly as we gathered with 107 members of the Destiny community. It was a
time of true connection and reflection, as
the story of Jesus and the message of redemption were shared with clarity and conviction. The engagement was sincere, with families interacting and responding with heartfelt responses.

One touching encounter was with a
mother—referred to as Zinash (a pseudonym to honor her privacy). She opened her heart to the message of hope and professed Jesus as her savior, requesting prayer and fellowship for the future. This moment was a reminder of the impact of our mission.

The next day our second group of our community members came together in a spirited gathering to share in the Word. It was a beautiful occasion filled with fellowship and the heartfelt sharing of the Gospel.

As we look back on these special days, it is challenging to encapsulate the full extent of the joy of sharing Jesus’ love. The photographs we share in this newsletter offer just a glimpse of the countless beautiful moments.

Your support made this possible. It's not just the food item handouts but the opportunity to share love, hope, and a sense of belonging that makes a difference in the lives of many. We extend our deepest thanks for your continued partnership, prayer and love.

Love,
Hareg, The Destiny Academy

Sponsorships and Mission Trips

The cost to sponsor one student for one year is $500. Members of MissionWay currently sponsor 50 students at Destiny. Sponsoring students gives them the opportunity to attend school, attain a better life for their family, and learn about the love of Christ.

We also send a team to serve at the school as needed. Our trips are currently postponed due to Ethiopia’s ongoing unrest. We have served in many ways, including training teachers, teaching English classes for the students, repairing and constructing a campus, setting up a library, and providing health education to the teachers and families of the sponsor students. We are also helping to support a nurse/social worker to serve the Destiny community on a full-time basis. Join us in praying for this opportunity!
